Phil Mickelson walked up the steep hill leading to the ninth tee at TPC Southwind fist bumping fans and accepting congratulations. His final hole Friday was also coming immediately after he rolled in his longest birdie putt of the day on No. 8. The gallery swelled with people trying to catch a glimpse of the FedEx St. Jude Classic’s biggest attraction.

“It’s good karma,” Mickelson said to a fan on the tee box.

When the second round concluded, there was a three-way tie atop the leaderboard for the first time since 2008 on the PGA Tour. With 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel and relative unknowns Chez Reavie and rookie Sebastian Munoz all at 9-under par. Stewart Cink, a major champion of the recent past, was one shot back and 2014 FedEx St. Jude Classic champion Ben Crane lurked closely behind at 7-under.

Adam Scott, meanwhile, had logged the second round’s best score (64) to move into contention and Olive Branch native Braden Thornberry made the cut in his first PGA Tour event.
