I pretty much have a relationship with my Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV. My blends are part of my mainstay. I started with apple scraps and water and a bit of honey. I'll put it like this for you, if a “Katrina” was coming again, I would pack up my Master Tonic and Fyre Cider just after my animals and just before my boots and spirulina! My ACV is in my boogie bag, and always will be. No matter if you are an Old Salt with all things holistic or are wanting to take a walk on the wild side of growing and becoming, I want to encourage you to try this. YOU CAN DO THIS! I want you to be loaded for bear! ACV will surprise you. It will take more than one quick little blog entry for you get it all, so make sure and look for part two. You can also do an internet search on it, but be prepared to sit and read. You just might want to take notes on what you learn, like this. What is apple cider vinegar?
It is basically acetic acid and water made in a two step fermentation process. It has sugar and apples in it. When it ferments, the sugar is converted into alcohol. This process takes several weeks. Acetic acid bacteria( it’s everywhere) will grow, and it will oxygenate the mixture, turning the alcohol into acetic acid. While this transformation happens, various organic acids are created.These organic acids are what makes this a healing tonic. People in the know are saying that the acetic acid in ACV is what is increasing our bodies absorption of important nutrients from the other foods we eat.
I don't know how many jars I've dropped off to my people who are home sick from colds and flu, leg cramps, sore throat, heartburn and indigestion, constipation and more. Some people make chicken soup, and I make my apple cider vinegar that they can put in chicken soup! It's tasty.
I remember one time I was so sick when I remembered I had some pickled radishes. I opened the lid to see the most unappetizing mixture with floaty things in it— it was dark and there was one sad radish bobbing around in it. I sniffed it, took a little sip, then more and more. I could feel my body taking in every bit of it. It was a few hours when I could actually feel a difference. I had known about ACV, but I didn't own the process. This little jar had a bevy of not just good cooties, but AMAZING liquid gold in it! It is my go to for most things from when my stomach is upset to making salad dressings.
Studies show that ACT lowers blood pressure, helps with dandruff, acne, dry skin, foot care, sunburn, dry hair, oily hair, arthritis, cholesterol levels, weight loss, and type 2 diabetes! Researchers are saying that taking this may lower the glycemic effect of a meal by increasing the data to the brain that says… I am satisfied and a happy camper.
Today, I will suggest to simply go to the store and purchase a bottle. Make sure it says “organic” and importantly that it looks FUNKY! Make sure there is a floaty, dusty material in the mixture. Braggs is a great brand, but I have noticed stores getting other brands as well. You want to buy“raw” ACV versus “pasteurized.” Pasteurized is vinegar that has been sterilized. You don't want this. All the good “bugs” are dead.
It is also cost effective to make your own, and I will be sharing how to make it later. I keep my bottles in a nice dark, cool place like the refrigerator.
Before drinking this tonic, you need to make sure you aren't allergic. Put a little on the inside of your wrist where your skin is more sensitive. Watch to see if you have a reaction. In my opinion, avoiding taking vinegar tablets or capsules in case they get stuck in your throat and create a burn or irritated place. Remember, that if you are allergic to everything, you might need to research more deeply. Many times people lose their allergies when they take this, or their allergies are lessened. It's all related to your immune system.
Regarding pregnancy, there are many ladies that have used it to manage morning sickness. Check with your midwife or doctor. When the stomach acid is too low or too high, ACV neutralizes it. Sometimes drinking it with a stomach calming tea, such as ginger or chamomile helps. There are not enough studies have been done relating to nursing women who are using ACV. Just proceed with basic caution. Do your own research. Use common sense and normal caution.
FINALLY, always check for interactions with prescription medications and supplements. You can do you your own research along with consulting your physician if you have any questions.
Directions: Take one to two Tablespoons per 8 oz. of water or juice. I sometimes use a straw. You can add fizzy water too!
Here is a simple recipe I make. Have fun and tend to yourself. You are needed! Remember this is a wonderful way to do some preventative medicine so that you are not caught off guard.
My Ache Be-gone Arthritis Blend:
Storage: sealed glass container
time to make: 15 min or so.
2 celery stalks
2 Tablespoons ACV
1 Tablespoon magnesium citrate
2 cups bottled water( no chlorine or fluoride)
Raw honey or stevia
Now, if you are on any medications be advised and be careful. Get creative and trade out the grapefruit for something else. Your medication may advise you to avoid grapefruit or not, some people are fine with it...just talk to your doctor.
The citrus fruits are vitamin-C strong horses that help prevent free radical damage in the cartilage that leads to inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Magnesium is known as the relaxation mineral. The citrate makes it more absorbable form of this important mineral. You can find this in a health food store.
Take the grapefruit, orange, lemon, and celery and put it in a juicer, discard the pulp.
Add ACV, and magnesium citrate to the juice.
Sometimes I use Stevia instead of honey. Do this to taste.
Drink about ¼ of this mixture every morning with breakfast
It lasts up to two weeks.
Sometimes I will add this to other mixtures.
My Four Thieves Vinegar Recipe (use for cold and flu)
storage: Refrigerate in sealed glass jars or bottles for up to 1 year
prep time: 10 min
The story of the “Four Thieves” has its own blog, but I will tell you that during the Bubonic Plague, there were four thieves who weren't getting sick and dying when they were stealing from the dead. They were drinking this tonic.They were caught and were spared death if they shared their recipe. There are many versions of this. This recipe is in my top two. The longer it brews the better and more potent it is.
2 Tablespoons dried Thyme
2 Tablespoons dried Rosemary
2 Tablespoons dried Sage
2 Tablespoons dried lavender
2 Tablespoons dried mint
2 Tablespoons dried cinnamon
2 Tablespoons dried cloves
2 Teaspoons minced/chopped raw garlic
1 (32 ounce ) bottle Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
a little bit of lemon juice to taste.
In a large glass container with a non-reactive lip, combine all dry ingredients and the garlic. Pour the vinegar over mixture. Add lemon if you want to.
Leave in cool dark place for about 6 weeks. Shake daily if possible.
Use a fine mesh to separate mixture from the herbs.
Pour mixture into bottles or containers and seal.
Directions: Adults take 1 Tablespoon diluted in tea or water. Children 1 teaspoon diluted in tea or water.
These are a simple and effective way for you to build your immune system and rebalance your intestinal flora. You will see a difference. Enjoy and reach me if you have any questions.
