Lanterns: Emails Reveal 'Clinton, Inc.' Pay to Play

Emails Reveal 'Clinton, Inc.' Pay to Play

When MSNBC's Morning Joe spends over forty minutes discussing it, it has to be damning. New emails released via Wikileaks include a 2011 memo by top Clinton aide Douglas Bland. The memo, written during Hillary Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State, reveals what the Washington Post labels as a "circle of enrichment" that paid Bill Clinton tens of millions of dollars for speaking engagements and consulting. Band even referred to it as "Clinton, Inc."

The Washington Post explains:

When top Bill Clinton aide Douglas Band wrote the memo, he was a central player at the Clinton Foundation and president of his own corporate consulting firm. Over the course of 13 pages, he made a case that his multiple roles had served the interests of the Clinton family and its charity.

In doing so, Band also detailed a circle of enrichment in which he raised money for the Clinton Foundation from top-tier corporations such as Dow Chemical and Coca-Cola that were clients of his firm, Teneo, while pressing many of those same donors to provide personal income to the former president.

In a chain of emails, Band admitted, “We have dedicated ourselves to helping the President secure and engage in for-profit activities,” Band also said he “sought to leverage [his] activities, including my partner role at Teneo, to support and to raise funds for the foundation.”

The above 2011 email exchange came after Chelsea Clinton raised concerns about Brand's actions to then-Clinton Foundation advisor John Podesta. Chelsea worried that Brand was "hustling business at [Clinton Global Initiative]."

If the communication is authentic, it should be a damning blow to the Clinton Campaign.
