Former DNI James Clapper to Congress "no collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians"

The politicos were spinning the termination of FBI Director James Comey by the Trump Administration yesterday. Immediately after the announcement of Comey’s termination, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) explained that the firing of Comey was a “big mistake” for Donald Trump and called for an immediate independent council to investigate collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. Democrats have claimed that the Trump campaign worked with the Russians to negatively impact the outcome of the Presidential election.

"Earlier this afternoon President Trump called me and informed me he was firing Director Comey. I told the president, 'Mr. President, with all due respect, you are making a big mistake.’ ” Schumer told reporters on Tuesday.

Schumer then questioned Trump’s motives for the timing of Comey's firing.

"This is part of a deeply troubling pattern from the Trump administration. This does not seem to be a coincidence," Schumer said "every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire Director Comey was part of a coverup. This investigation must be run as far away as possible from this White House," he said.

Considering the facts of the investigation as explained by James Clapper during the latest Congressional hearings, questions about the truth behind the investigation have been very blurry. James Clapper, as recently as last month, confirmed that there was currently no evidence that there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians.

"We did not include any evidence in our report, and I say, 'our,' that's NSA, FBI and CIA, with my office, the Director of National Intelligence, that had anything, that had any reflection of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians. There was no evidence of that included in our report."

Clapper later reinforced this comment when being questioned under oath by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-NC). You can see this exchange around the 35 minute time frame in this video.

Clapper also explained that there was evidence that the Russians had attempted to influence the election in favor of Donald Trump by trying to damage the image of Hillary Clinton.
