Lanterns: Why is the Middle East in Conflict? Part 1

Why is the Middle East in Conflict? Part 1

The world war that has been waged in the Middle East involves enough confusion that even the most brilliant of military strategists argue about what is really going on there. Many people experience an eye-glazing effect when things like the Sykes-Picot Agreement or the differences between the Sunni and Shia factions of Islam are discussed. This is understandable because people often tune out when they hear complicated topics discussed that they believe do not affect them. However,

When did this turmoil begin… in modern times?

There has been turmoil in the region for thousands of years dating back to biblical times. Unfortunately, many in the region still hold a third world tribal mentality. So in order to unpack the issues of today, we will begin with WWI.

During the first World War, the Allied Powers (France, Britain, Australia, Canada, British India, Newfoundland, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, Italy, Japan, Serbia, Romania, Belgium, Greece, & Portugal) were looking for a way to cripple the enemy known as the Central Powers (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, & Darfur). The Allied Powers saw the Ottoman Empire as the weakest link.

The Ottoman Empire was a fractured Islamic Caliphate that was struggling to modernize in the industrial age. Ottomans were dabbling with Western influence which conflicted with their fundamentalist Islamic ideology. Arab nationalism (dating back as far as 1821 in the countries of Al-Sham (the Levant) or the “Greater Syra” region) was the rising foe to the Ottoman fundamentalists within the Ottoman Empire who were oppressing the growth of their people.

The Allies saw this fracturing as an opportunity to undermine the enemy with subversive tactics rather than military ones. The French and the British heavily subsidized the nationalists that were revolting against the Ottomans (Turks). Due to the overwhelming desire of the Arab people wishing to modernize, the Hashemite Arab leader, Grand Sharif Hussein, entered into an alliance with the United Kingdom and France against the Ottomans.

Sykes-Picot Agreement

Two of Hussein’s sons, Faisal and Abdullah, were convinced by T.E. Lawrence to coordinate their actions in support of the British strategy. During this time, a secret agreement between France and Britain called the Sykes-Picot agreement divided up the Arab provinces of the failing Ottoman Empire. This was to be the catalyst to the modern schism between the West and the East. which would eventually define the antagonists of the Cold War.

François Georges-Picot and Sir Mark Sykes

Following the Russian Revolution in October of 1917, the Communist Bolsheviks exposed the secret Sykes-Picot agreement. This embarrassed the Brits and upset the Arabs. Upset Arabs created what is now known as the Muslim Brotherhood.

In 1917 the Balfour Declaration paralleled the Sykes-Picot agreement by establishing a national home, Israel, for the Jewish people in Palestine. This only compounded the hatred for the West and more specifically, the Jews.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the defeat of the Central Powers in WWI, the region was carved up, per the Sykes-Picot agreement.

Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood is a Sunni Islamist organization that was founded by Hassan al-Banna to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity while instilling Islam and anti-western rhetoric as the core of its ideology. The Muslim Brotherhood's motto is "Believers are but Brothers; Islam is the Solution; Allah is our objective; The Qur'an is the Constitution; The Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; Death for the sake of Allah is our wish."

Today, Al-Banna would be the equivalent of a community activist-- promoting social welfare, anti-colonialism, public health, educational policies, natural resource management, and social inequalities which are all rooted in the context of traditional Islam. Al-Banna organized workers and the disenfranchised for Jihad against the West and colonial powers.

Hassan al-Banna

The influence of the Muslim Brotherhood still exists today as a very formidable political force. The Palestinian Islamic organization, Hamas, was founded as a Muslim Brotherhood offshoot in 1988 to liberate Palestine by eliminating the so-called Israeli occupation. Since its inception, Hamas has been labeled as a terrorist organization by the United States government.

Interesting enough, Hamas and more broadly,  the Muslim Brotherhood, have deeply rooted ties to the previous White House, as well as the Democratic Party.

Muslim Brotherhood member and President of the Islamic Society of Northern America (ISNA), Azhar Azeez, openly met with the Obama White House. It should be noted that the ISNA was an unindicted co-conspirator for financing terror through Hamas. Additionally, Azeez was one of the founding members of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) which was also created by the Muslim Brotherhood, has also allegedly funneled money to Palestinian terror groups.

In a detailed exposé of the Muslim Brotherhood, The Clarion Project quoted another founder of CAIR, Omar Ahmad, as saying, "Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth."

The Clarion Project has done incredible work exposing the subversive nature of the Muslim Brotherhood. As mentioned by us, as well on, the Clarion Project has exposed the five phases to which the Muslim Brotherhood is subverting the American culture for domination. This may seem extreme, however, it is backed up with documentation exposed in the Holy Land Foundation Trial where hundreds of unindicted co-conspirators were linked to terrorism in the US. In this Muslim Brotherhood Explanatory Memorandum, the evidence shows how these five phases were to be implemented.

See previous Lantern’s post.

There has also been a huge exposé done on Suhail Khan and his infiltration of the GOP and even conservative organizations. Suhail Khan’s parents were founders of the Muslim Brotherhood in America while promoting conservative principles when defending Islam. Suhail’s father was a founder of the ISNA. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the American Conservative Union (ACU) which hosts the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

There is much dispute over what the Islamic State should be called. Some infer that calling the Islamic State the “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) rather than the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS) is only pandering to the anti-West sentiment and specifically to the left’s political disdain for Israel. I would much rather call the group what they call themselves to further underline the nature and desire for what they want. They wish to restore the Levant to its pre-WWI era with a new established Caliphate.

This map shows where ISIL is on their road to restoring the Levant.

Let’s be clear that ISIS or ISIL is not what some would call radical Islam. It is fundamental Islam. ISIL is simply carrying out the interpreted will of Allah as defined by the Quran and the Hadith. They follow their scriptures literally. So when the Muslim reads: “Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority,”Quran (3:151) they mean to practice it as well.

They take the Quran literally.  In 8:12 it reads: “When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.”

Their justification for enslaving women as sex slaves comes from the following: “Prosperous are the believers who in their prayers are humble and from idle talk turn away and at almsgiving are active and guard their private parts save from their wives and what their right hands own then being not blameworthy.” (Quran 23:1-6)

Islamic Imams preach that the lives of those who are non-Muslims are to be devalued. So the brutal nature of ISIS or ISIL – whatever the hell you want to call these barbarians is their desire to follow the Quran. To understand what ISIS really wants, read this excellent article by Graeme Wood from the Atlantic.

Let's summarize the post thus far

1. Sykes-Picot started the turmoil between the West and the East in this region of the world. The desire by Arabs to regain their Islamic Caliphate has never waned. Many in the Arab community around the world are still very upset with the fact that Israel exists in that region of the world and those that put them there.

2. Islamists have been unsuccessful in convincing the Western world to abandon its secular modernity and has reverted to ideological subversion once practiced by Soviets. The Islamists created the Muslim Brotherhood to be the strategic organization for implementing Islamist fundamentals, ideology, and Sharia Law worldwide.

3. Jihadi warriors are fighting to reoccupy the Middle East to establish their Caliphate. Many of these warriors are emigrating to Western nations to provoke the West with Jihad in order to bring about the countdown to the apocalypse.

Check back for part 2 to find out how this all contributes to the turmoil of the Middle East.
