Lanterns: China Kicks Off Yearly Dog and Cat Meat Festival

China Kicks Off Yearly Dog and Cat Meat Festival

Today marked the beginning of the Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China where upwards to 10,000 dogs and cats are eaten over a ten day period.

Raising dogs and cats for consumption is a relatively new tradition in Asia, that has been around the past 500 years, in China, South Korea and other neighboring countries. The belief is that eating dog will ward off heat during the warm months.

People bring dogs from surrounding communities for the festival. It is reported the animals are in cramped cages, are not fed or watered for days, and are killed in ways Westerners would consider to be inhumaine.

Petitions to put an end to the festival received millions of signatures worldwide. The local government, however, does not condone the event and offers the explanation that the event is privatized.

If you would like to be involved in stopping this annual festival please join the continued movement to STOP YULIN FOREVER.
