Reaction to President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress was clear-- listeners rated the speech an overwhelming success.
A CNN/ORC poll of viewers found that 70 percent became more optimistic about the country’s direction and nearly two-thirds felt that the President was tackling the right issues. A CBS News/YouGov poll found that 76 percent of viewers had a positive opinion of the speech, and 82 percent found it to be “presidential.” The CBS poll also found that 61 percent of those surveyed felt “more optimistic” about how Trump will govern in the future. Breaking down the issues: 78 percent favored his infrastructure plan, 75 percent approved of his economic proposals, 70 percent supported his illegal immigration plans, and 65 percent backed his ideas on healthcare.
Trump’s tone was positive and less verbose than his other speeches, which won favor from the public, as well as commentators from Trump’s nemesis- the media. “This will be a very well-received speech for Donald Trump,” said liberal MSNBC host, Rachel Maddow. Van Jones of CNN agreed, remarking if Trump can keep striking this tone, he will be re-elected. He continued, “[This] was one of the most extraordinary moments ever seen in Americans politics.” Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace beamed, “It was one of the best speeches in that setting I’ve ever heard any president give.”
