Lanterns: A Patriot's Preference

A Patriot's Preference

People have been so confused by me this political season. You see, I’m easily judged as a Liberal, a Democrat, or a Socialist, until, of course, we sit down and chat. Most folks make this wild assumption about me. It drove me nuts at first, especially the Socialist part. However, I love breaking myths, and live to teach. I know I am not the only person this has happened to.

I love animals and care about ecology. I cry for Bambi, but I believe in culling the herd. I make herbal potions and lotions and use essential oils, a lot. This is nothing new or even “New Age.” There are even recipes in the Bible. It has just been co-opted over and over again all thru history.

Being mistaken for a Liberal, a Democrat, or even a Socialist, even for the most interesting reasons has been strange. Oddly, these reasons have had nothing to with politics.  I am a Holistic Practitioner. Think about it, these labels we use are becoming very inaccurate. I love Yoga, aromatherapy, herbology, and more. I’m an integrative therapist. That just means I combine the best of all worlds in my practice.  I am also an artist. Now can you see now how I have been mistaken so easily?

Here’s the shocker. I stand in complete AWE of our Constitution. I am still learning about it and know how much I don’t know. Right now, I am learning about the seventeen Enumerated Powers.

I was at Cracker Barrel awhile back--  I was casually cruising the country store while heading over to check out the Burt’s Bees to compare its ingredients to my personal blend when I saw the words “Compose the American Soul,” and I stopped to look. I usually stop at the large patriotic section. (I check out to see how much is “Made in America.” I speak to the manager when things aren’t “Made In America,” that should be “Made IN America”).

I picked up this little book, "The Patriot’s Reference.” It has “Documents, Speeches, and Sermons That Compose the American Soul” written right on the front cover. “Compose the American Soul.”  I was riveted as I thumbed thru it.

A hunger presented itself to me, and it wasn’t the cheese casserole. I bought this little book right then. It’s lived in my purse, sat on my table, and has been within a short reach since that day.  It's torn, has coffee stains, and post it notes in it with highlighter marks on it.

That was when I finally understood my journey with America’s history.  I have been asking people questions like, “When did you know you had to do or say something.” I knew I was on to something when I tweeted a question to @Deray and was promptly blocked. I wasn’t even being rude.

When did you risk crossing that line by sticking your head up above the crowd?

I know a bunch of folks who say what they think all the time. For some, they would rather avoid conflict, but these are the days when conflict will not avoid us. It takes quite a bit of stressful crab walking at one of my family functions, just to get out unscathed.

Remember, you can have a great yoga practice, have less stress and be a Patriot while packing all at the same time. You define you. We are not a cookie cut group of folk.
