The Chinese People’s Liberation Army, also known as the PLA, has been put an alert due to the growing tensions between the United States and North Korea. As a result of these tensions, and the unpredictable nature of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, China has sent a force of 150,000 soldiers to the North Korean border in the area of Yalu and Tumen rivers. The thought is that China is preparing for the influx of North Korean refugees that would occur if the United States decided to do a pre-emptive strike against the hostile nation.
Hong Soon-do, a Beijing correspondent for AsiaToday, has confirmed that the PLA forces on the border consist of the 39th and 40th Army groups. The 39th is best known as a heavy mechanized unit, and the 40th is the rapid deployment force of the Chinese military. Both forces are considered the countries best combat and firepower units.
The rising situation with North Korea has had serious considerations by the communist country’s leadership, for the PLA superiors have ordered the entire Northern District to fully prepare for combat. In addition to the military units, China has also deployed Dongfeng-31A missiles, 12 Dongfeng-03 ballistic missiles with a range of 2,800km, and 24 Dongfeng-21 “Carrier-killer” missiles to the 51st Base under Rocket Unit stationed in Shenyang of Liaoning province.
A Mr. Dou, a retired officer of the Rocket Unit, said that:
The brains of the PLA were surprised by the United States’ sudden Syria missile strike. They cannot help but think the U.S. could exercise armed force against North Korea in the future. They realized U.S. threat to North Korea looking at the implementation of US-Korea military drills such as Key Resolve exercise and the reality of half of US Pacific carriers heading towards Korean Peninsula. It would be rather strange not to respond.
It is also reported that United States Forces in Japan and South Korea have missiles aimed and ready to fire, whether in a pre-emptive attack or a reactionary one remains to be seen.
