There is controversy brewing in US Schools, Most recently in Chatham N.J. Two mothers HAVE complained their children are being indoctrinated into Islam.
They aren’t the only ones complaining. There are parents nationwide who are making the same accusations. I decided to investigate this for myself. Here is what I found:
It started with a video shown to students that explained the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars include:
A proclamation of Faith
A Muslims daily prayer
The Pilgrimage to Mecca
The U.S Department of Education is funding this Islamic education program in many of America’s public schools. The target is students in grades five through 12. Some say they are taught the Islamic way of life in a way that crosses the line from academics to indoctrination. Some atheist parents, as well as parents from other faiths, have even said this is proselytizing to their children. When you watch the video below you will note this is clearly not a study of Islam for historical purposes.
“’Access Islam’ is funded by the Department of Education and is being promoted on various websites,” Martin Mawyer, the president and founder of Christian Action Network said, “So, PBS Learning Media is one of the websites that is promoting it. The Smithsonian also promotes it, and the Indiana Department of Education promotes it, and even the United Nations promotes it.”
The “Access Islam” curriculum includes 10 lesson plans which include the “Five Pillars of Islam;” “Salat: Prayer in Muslim Life;” “Ramadan Observance;” “Quran: Sacred Scripture of Islam;” “The Haji: Journey to Mecca;” “Islam in America;” and “Women in Islam.”
These lesson plans extoll the virtues of a belief in Allah, that he is the only God, and that Mohammed was his prophet. The mothers of the two NJ middle-school students said this amounted to proselytizing. Seventh graders in this school are taught: “May God help us all find the true faith, Islam.”
Also taught in the video is the Shahada, which is the Muslim prayer of conversion, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.”
Surely the government must see the irony of the situation. For so many years the Department of Education has screamed “separation of church and state” whenever there was even a hint of Christianity being talked about in public schools; we have all come to accept there is no religion taught in public schools. It is confusing, to say the least. When I went to the usual fact checker websites they all said the stories were not true, but here we have the facts. The stories are true.
Libby Hilsenrath, one of the two mothers who is pushing back against the class curriculum says, “no other religion is taught nearly to this level of detail in the ‘world cultures and geography’ class. Would they be comfortable teaching the doctrines of Christianity for example? Would you be comfortable in a public school to say ‘Jesus is the way and the truth and the life and no one comes to [the Father] except through me’? I don’t think so,” she said.
“I’m all in favor of teaching religion if it’s all done in the same manner and with the same depth,” added the other mother, Nancy Gayer.
The teaching is part of New Jersey’s core content standards.
Parents also wanted to know who picked the curriculum. They want to know how the video and accompanying PowerPoint was chosen, and with what intent. None of their concerns have been addressed by the Chatham, New Jersey school board or the superintendent. It seems to me it’s reasonable for parents to question the curriculum of any public school paid for by tax dollars.
The two mothers have retained legal counsel from the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center.
The moms have been attacked by members of their community for speaking out. I encourage all parents of school-aged children to request the curriculum from your children’s teachers each year. I can’t remember the last time there was such opposition to parents wanting religious studies out of the classroom.
